Youth Mental Health First Aider by MHFA England

At Know How Training & Consultancy Limited, we provide a variety of health and safety mandatory and legislative training courses. When people think of first aid, people often think of physical issues. However, mental health first aid is just as important as that for physical health.

Issues to do with youth mental health are particularly paramount, with statistics and government reports showing such issues to be on the rise. Our two-day training course will enable you to offer individuals trained support. You will be better equipped to help a young person’s recovery, deescalating issues from getting to crisis point, and can even save lives.

Young Mental Health First Aid Training is focused on the context of England’s child health care policy, and covers information about the subject, risk factors and prevention plans such as ALGEE. Each letter stands for five key points:

  • Assess for risk of suicide or harm
  • Listen non-judgmentally
  • Give reassurance and information
  • Encourage appropriate professional help
  • Encourage self-help and other support strategies
  • Assess for Risk of Suicide or Harm

The Youth Mental Health First Aid Training course will cover depression and anxiety issues, self-harm and eating disorders, and suicide and psychosis. In each case, you will learn about exactly what is meant by each mental health issue, the different types where relevant, the facts and figures, risk factors, and signs and symptoms. You will learn about the steps to recovery, as well as crisis first aid.

Once you have completed the course, you will obtain a youth MHFA manual for reference purposes, a workbook that can also help to support the learner’s own mental health, as well as a qualifying certificate.

Our Youth MHFA Two Day course qualifies you as a Youth Mental Health First Aider.

Youth Mental Health First Aiders have:

  • An in depth understanding of young people’s mental health and factors that affect well being
  • Practical skills to spot the triggers and signs of mental health issues
  • Confidence to reassure and support a young person in distress
  • Enhanced interpersonal skills such as non-judgmental listening
  • Knowledge to help a young person recover their health by guiding them to further support – whether that’s through self-help sites, their place of learning, the NHS, or a mix – engaging with parents, carers and external agencies where appropriate
  • Ability to support a young person with a long-term mental health issue or disability to thrive
  • Tools to look after your own mental well being

We limit numbers to 16 people per course so that the instructor can keep people safe and supported while they learn.

Learning takes place across four manageable sessions. Through a mix of group activities, presentations and discussions, each session is built around a Youth Mental Health First Aid action plan.
