The Importance of Health & Safety Courses

Health and Safety are of paramount concern no matter what you are doing, whether you are at home or work.  However, when employed or employing others, it is the responsibility of the business owners to ensure the safety of all staff and visitors to any commercial working premises.  This starts with making sure that the area that is worked in is safe and kept in good condition.  However, no matter how well a premisses is kept, any working environment can present a number of hazards, and the more people who work for you, the higher the risk of trips, falls, and other injuries.

How then can you promote health and safety awareness so that everyone is united in their working ethics and activities?  Health and Safety training has long been considered the best way to promote and ensure employee wellbeing for a number of reasons.  It makes clear that management and higher bodies are interested in the safety and wellbeing of each of their staff, it promotes a caring and mindful attitude amongst staff, and it keeps the possible dangers within their particular working environment at the forefront of everyone’s minds.

There are also a number of working practices that cannot be avoided, even if they are associated with a level of risk.  For example, working at height does and will present multiple risks.  However, by promoting safe working practice, by means of courses such as a Tower for Stairs – PASMA course, that is specific to the kind of working at height a person will be exposed to, all can be united in their attitude towards the equipment and methods of work they employ.

Of course, each business and job role will present certain hazards and problems that others will not.  Therefore, there are a number of health and safety courses available, which mean you can tailor make the training to meet the needs of your employees, customers and service users.

Health and Safety Awareness

Health and safety awareness provides an excellent basis to promote the well-being of all in your employment.  This course helps everyone to recognise that health and safety starts with them, and they should have a general awareness of their own wellbeing, and how their actions can impact on others.  Also, by helping your staff recognise dangers and potential hazards, they can work to reduce or even eliminate the risk altogether.  This leads to peace of mind and smoother working conditions.

With this goal in mind, an Introduction to Risk Assessment is also highly recommended.

First Aid Training

If the worst should happen, having a first aider at work can not only give the all-around care needed if someone should suffer a minor injury, but it can significantly increase the chances of a person’s survival if they should suffer a serious injury or accident.  For example, if someone is unconscious and in need of CPR when it is given within 4 minutes of the accident, there is a significantly improved survival rate.

Therefore, to optimise employee wellbeing, a first aid course is vital.

Manual Handling Courses

There are very few jobs that do not entail some form of manual handling, from the office to nursing care, and from those in the construction trade to the many working in hospitality.  When each member of staff is encouraged to play a role in taking care of their own health and safety, then it adds to the organisation and running of the business.

Other Health & Safety Courses

There are other courses that are specific to certain working environments.  For example, Asbestos awareness, and Noise Awareness may only apply to a select number of working environments.  Nevertheless, if your staff are given the correct training, no matter how small the number of staff exposed to the hazard, it can have a large impact on the smooth running, cost-effectiveness and general wellbeing of all within your working premises.

Liability

To ensure that everyone takes health and safety as seriously as they should, the law has enforced the responsibility of management and company owners to make sure they have suitable health and safety training for their staff.  Although this is not the main consideration for health and safety training, it does provide another reason why is it considered important.
