NEBOSH General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety

The NEBOSH National General Certificate training course provides a  introduction to the basics of occupational Health and Safety.

It looks at the management of health and safety and a wide variety of workplace hazards.

The NEBOSH General Certificate is taken by delegates from a vast range of backgrounds who are already in, or looking for, a career in the health and safety sector.

Anyone can enrol on the NEBOSH Certificate programme as no previous health and safety knowledge is required.  Delegates will be required to write short reports as part of the training and exam.

Successful delegates will be awarded the NEBOSH General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety on completion of the course. The NEBOSH Certificate is accepted by IOSH – the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health – in meeting the academic requirements for Technician Membership of IOSH (Tech IOSH). It is also accepted by The International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM) for associate membership.
 

Objectives

On successful completion of the NEBOSH General Certificate course candidates will be able to: –

  • Understand the legal framework, moral & economic requirements & implications for good standards in health & safety within an organisation.
  • Develop, promote & communicate an effective health & safety culture in an organisation.
  • Identify the key features of a health & safety policy, the preparations & performance review of a health & safety audit.
  • Understand the importance of proactive & reactive health & safety monitoring measures.
  • Identify hazards in the workplace & carry out risk assessments, record findings & review procedures.
  • Advise on strategies for controlling hazards, reducing risks & applying safe systems of work.
  • Identify fire hazards & consequential risks, advise on measures to minimise fire risks & develop fire procedures.
  • Identify ill health effects of physical processes of work & the environment & recommend suitable measures to combat risks.
  • Explain the processes & procedures for investigating & reporting accidents at work.

This NEBOSH Certificate qualification will cover the following topics: –

Unit NG1 – Management of Health & Safety
Element 1 – Foundations in Health & Safety
Element 2 – Health & safety management systems – Plan
Element 3 – Health & safety management systems – Do
Element 4 – Health & safety management systems – Check
Element 5 – Health & safety management systems – Act

Unit NG2 – Controlling Workplace Hazards
Element 1 – Workplace hazards and risk control
Element 2 – Transport hazards and risk control
Element 3 – Musculoskeletal hazards and risk control
Element 4 – Work equipment hazards and risk control
Element 5 – Electrical safety
Element 6 – Fire Safety
Element 7 – Chemical and biological health hazards and risk control
Element 8 – Physical and psychological health hazards and risk control

Health and Safety Practical Application
The course attendee must carry out a practical assessment of a workplace and prepare a management report.

Duration

10 Days Classroom + Practical + Exam

Assessment

There are two assessments to complete at the end of this NEBOSH course.

  • A two hour written paper
  • A practical risk assessment

NEBOSH’s external examiners will mark the assessments.  Students are notified of their results 11 weeks after the exams.

You are responsible for submitting your assessments within agreed timescales. If you don’t meet these deadlines, you risk failing the course.
