Qualitative fit testing is a pass/fail test method that uses your sense of taste or smell, or your reaction to an irritant in order to detect leakage into the respirator facepiece. To ensure that the selected RPE has the potential to provide adequate protection to wearer, they must undergo facepiece fit-testing. For RPE to be suitable it must be matched to the job, the environment, the anticipated airborne contaminant exposure level, and the wearer. People come in all sorts of shapes and sizes it is unlikely that one particular type, or size of RPE facepiece, will fit everyone. Fit-testing will help ensure that the equipment selected is suitable for the wearer.

Requirement for the Face Fit test of masks is described in the Approved Code of Practices supporting:

  • The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations
  • The Control of Lead at Work Regulations
  • The Control of Asbestos Regulations

Qualitative Face Fit testing is a method used for checking that a tight fitting mask matches the person’s facial features and seals adequately to the wearers face. This method is only suitable for N95 or half mask, not full mask.

Our professional consultants are trained in accordance with the accredited HSE Fit2Fit program, to undertake qualitative fit testing. The fit test is undertaken with masks issued by the employer and the wearer must be clean-shaven.
